Early versions of AppleScript required the support of a system extension later built in. If OSL is present in classic Mac OS 8.x or newer, it causes instability and reportedly, in Mac OS 9, disk corruption, so run this immediately after you install an upgrade to system versions later than 8.

Purge OSL serves as a demonstration of one way to use the reopen event that is sent by Finder 8.0 and later when a user reopens a stay-open applet that is already running. It also illustrates a technique to correctly detect the version of system software installed on a disk, even if the script is being run from a startup disk under a different version of system software.
