MacTrek is a complete re-implementation of a classic network game known as netrek. The game was a major breakthrough in on-line gaming and even after three decades has lost little of it’s addictiveness. The original client that exists for Mac OS X is in fact a cross-platform X11 application that lacks the grace and ease of use that makes the Mac what it is.
MacTrek is a free to play open source software cross platform multiplayer hybrid multi-directional shooter and real time strategy game for up to 16 players. The goal of the game is to capture all the opposing team's planets. MacTrek combines "twitch" style reflexive dogfighting with extensive team play and strategy.
