CatBase is the cross-media database publishing solution for publishing catalogues, directories, price lists, membership directories, classified ads, or any other database-type information. CatBase will format your information according to your specifications: when data is transferred from the database to the publishing destination (QuarkXPress, InDesign, FrameMaker, PageMaker, HTML document, XML file etc.), it is sorted and formatted - along with pictures (most publishing destinations) - automatically and consistently.

What is Database Publishing?
Database publishing means taking data that resides in a database and publishing it in the form of a catalogue, directory, price list, membership list, or whatever. If this is what you need to do with your data, and whether you want to publish it in print or on the Internet, CatBase can simplify the job considerably by automating the most time-consuming and laborious part of the job.

What is Cross Media Publishing?
Cross media publishing means publishing data in more than one medium. For example, you may want to publish your data in print (using a page layout program such as QuarkXPress), on your web site, and as XML files. CatBase makes it very easy to accomplish this.

How can CatBase help?
Publishing data that originated in a database can be a very long-winded and laborious task. The steps involved are normally:

1. Select the data you want to publish
2. Try to remember how it's supposed to be sorted
3. Export your data from the database to a text file
4. Place the text from the text file into a template in your page layout program
5. The boring part! Spend hours or even days working your way through the text, formatting each paragraph or subset of data as required, and inserting pictures where necessary.

Doing it the CatBase way:

1. Set up Publishing Style Sheets in CatBase. These describe what data you want to publish, how you want it formatted, and how you want it sorted.
2. Select the data you want to publish
3. Export your data from the database to a text file
4. Place the text file into a template in your page layout program. Everything is automatically formatted as required, including the placement of pictures (not all publishing destinations support picture placement).
Not only do you save lots of time -- you are also assured that everything will be formatted consistently. For example, if you want all new product names to be set in red, CatBase will do this for you.
