The SMS widget for Yahoo! (aka Konfabulator) allows you to send text messages to mobile phones. You don't even need to have a phone at all! It's free to send messages to the USA and Canada, and cheap to send messages worldwide.

Built-in address book, so you can quickly select friends to contact.
Long messages are automatically split up into multiple pieces.
You can include your mobile number or email as the reply address of your messages. This lets recipients reply to your SMS messages.
