SafariDockStatus is a SIMBL plugin that automatically tallies the number of unread news items tracked by Safari 2 and updates the dock icon to reflect that number. Source code is available from the website.
You can also change the size of the label if you think that's too big and ugly, or you're a bat and you can't read it. The size is saved along with Safari's other preferences.
Unless you've already cleaned them out, by default Safari has a number of RSS feeds already in your bookmarks database. This will cause the total unread number to be oddly high initially. Open up the bookmarks editor, find the 'News' folder, and clean out the ones you don't want, then the number will only reflect the feeds you're interested in.
I'm pretty sure there aren't any bugs, as this is fairly simple code, but if you do run into any problems, email me on software {at} burntout {dot} net and I'll endeavour to sort them out. This plugin works happily alongside PithHelmet and Saft; I haven't tried any others, and others may or may not break it, depending on various things including the phase of the moon.
What's New:
Updated Info.plist to allow loading in Safari build 419.3
Updated SIMBL to 0.8.1.
Requirements:
Mac OS X 10.4 or higher
Safari 2.0.
