This AppleScript Automator Action will change the names of the selected files to make them more web-friendly. Uppercase letters are made lowercase; spaces and most special characters are converted to underscores. Successive underscores are removed.
Works great as a Finder plug-in... Just select a bunch of files, control-click, and choose “Make Names Web-Friendly” from the Automator menu! To save it as a Finder plug-in, just open it in Automator and select.
What's New:
If a file of the same name already exists, a number is added to the new file name, instead of displaying an error (thanks to Atreyu Svoren for the suggestion)
Underscores, dashes, and spaces are now properly trimmed from the beginning and end of the file name
File names with no web-friendly characters (or only dashes or underscores) are now renamed to "untitled".
