Hex Fiend is a hex editor for Mac OS X.
It supports arbitrary insertions and deletions, and unlimited file size.
It uses very little memory and is extremely fast because it does not need to store the file in memory.
It also has a data inspector to view data as integer or floating point, signed or unsigned, big or little endian, in various sizes.
Here are some key features of "Hex Fiend":
Insert, delete, rearrange. Hex Fiend is not limited to in-place changes like some hex editors.
Work with huge files. Hex Fiend can handle as big a file as you’re able to create. It’s been tested on files as large as 118 GB.
Small footprint. Hex Fiend does not need to keep your files in memory. You won’t dread launching or working with Hex Fiend even on low-RAM machines.
Fast. Open a huge file, scroll around, copy and paste, all instantly. Find what you’re looking for with fast searching.
Smart saving. Hex Fiend knows not to waste time overwriting the parts of your files that haven’t changed.
Data inspector. Interpret data as integer or floating point, signed or unsigned, big or little endian...
Smooth scrolling. No separate “pages” - scroll like any text document.
What's New:
Fixed bugs:
The edit window is now horizontally resizable
Custom fonts are supported
"Overwrite mode" implemented
Fixed a crash when searching through an empty document
Removed useless spelling item
Clicking on the status bar at the bottom now alternates between decimal and hexadecimal representation, and index-range / start-end display
Fixed a cosmetic overdraw problem with the status bar in small windows
The 32 bit representation can now be highlighted in the data inspector
Color view with various data representations
Hidden files can be opened
Fixed a bug that caused incorrect highlighting when selecting text in the ASCII column
Known bugs:
Searching backwards ("Find Previous") is not optimized.
Dependencies are not tracked cross-file - if you copy from one file, paste into another, and then modify and save the first file, you may get unexpected results in the second.
Autoscroll is not implemented.
